O xadrez na literatura

Poema

Caissa é a "Deusa Padroeira" dos xadrezistas. Ela foi criada em 1763 por Sir William Jones num poema intitulado Caissa. Inspirado por de Scacchia Ludus (na imagem), o poema relata a história da invenção do xadrez por Marte. No final do poema pode ler-se o seguinte:

. . . fram'd a tablet of celestial moldInlay'd with squares of silver and gold;Then of two metals form's the warlike band.That here compact in show of battle stand;He taught the rules that guide the pensive game,And call'd it Caissa from the dryad's name.Whence Albion's sons, who most its praise confess,Approved the play and named it thoughtful Chess.
